I updated Estate quickstart on my demo site, and I still have background images.
We made also other tests and also wasn't problems with bg images.
I made updates also on my private (online) sites and - OK
Maybe you have to clear Joomla and browser cache.

Without a link to the website where bg img were, I cannot tell anything constructive.

A lot of users made an update, and so far none of them lost bg images in Rows.
So it must be something else.
You can install 3.3.8, for now, if it can help.

If you turn On production mode please turn off the Helix "Compress CSS Files" feature and clear all type of cache then It will work perfectly. Let me know after checking in my way.
