Custom text field per product (player name printing) that carries through to cart & order — best approach?

Asked by Jo Van Driessche 1 month ago Last activity 1 month ago

Hi,

I sell teamwear (shirts, hoodies) and want to offer customers the option to have a player's name printed on the back after selecting the shirt/hoodie. This needs to:

Be a free-text field on the product single page (not a predefined variation like size/color)
Be tied to that specific line item in the cart (so multiple shirts in one order can each have a different name)
Carry through to checkout and show up on the order, so we can process the print job correctly.

Can someone suggest how I can do this please?

Thanks, Jo

Hi,

The best approach would be to use a custom product option/add-on field rather than creating it as a variation. A text field such as “Player Name” can be added to the product page, and the entered value should be stored with that specific cart item.

This way, customers can add multiple shirts with different names, and each line item will keep its own printing information through checkout and the final order.

If EasyStore does not currently support product-level custom fields that pass through to order items, this would require a customization. Product add-on systems generally handle this workflow by attaching customer-entered options to the cart item and order details.

I would avoid using variations for this because player names are unique per order and would create unnecessary product combinations.

thanks for your reply, I can't do customizations myself, so I worked with a variant "name printed yes/no" and added name to be printed as the customer note on the checkout page. I guess this will work for now.
thanks, Jo
