Front End Editing Not Working

I am unable to edit in the front end. I get taken to what looks like the front end with the SPPB tool bar on the left but none of the page components are active to edit?
If you click on the 'edit page' you just keep nesting the page with none of the page eliments editable?
Would love to understand why this is happening. I have gone through the forum to find no solution. Please advise.
