Raw Template Layout -- Keystone For Getting Started

I am a member of an organization that needs to upgrade from J3 to J5. It has been a while since I did any template layout, so I'm learning as I go.

We do not want to use the SP Page Builder at this time, because design is less important than content delivery.

I downloaded the Event Planner template as a starting point. However, I don't know where to start. I reviewed the documentation, but it presumes a Quick Start installation with the Page Builder component.

It would be helpful to view the module positions overlaid on a thumbnail of the sample or something that would show the module positions essentially in real time.

Do you have a resource?

Please follow this documentation to find module positions on any page. To know about the template module positions, see here:

templates/eventplanner/templateDetails.xml

You have to set the position in the Layout to show it on the pages. Besides the template documentation, study Helix Ultimate documentation too. The template is built on Helix Ultimate framework. So, everything is same here.
