I ran into the same issue. I did notice the UI Button Group Add On does work and not the stock Button Group add on. My issue is all my sites are built with the stock button group so definitly looking forward to the fix in the next update.

Accepted AnswerIndeed, it wasn't fixed yet in 5.3.8 :/
You have to use the back-end editor to add files for buttons.
