Rename Helix Ultimate Template

Hello JoomShaper Support,

I have followed your official guide "How to Rename Helix Ultimate Template" exactly, renaming the original template (mednic) prior to installation without using the QuickStart package. In the templateDetails.xml file, I have left the updateservers section unchanged, so it still points to:

<updateservers> <server type="extension" priority="1" name="mednic">https://www.joomshaper.com/updates/mednic.xml</server> </updateservers> I would like to confirm the update compatibility of the renamed Helix Ultimate template in this scenario. Specifically:

Will the template still receive update notifications and allow seamless updates from JoomShaper as the update server reference remains unchanged?

What potential disadvantages or risks could occur from renaming the original template instead of using a child template (for example in terms of update process stability or support)?

Would you recommend renaming the original mednic template as an alternative solution to child templates to prevent overwriting user-specific customizations during updates?

Thank you very much for your detailed clarification.

Best regards, Robert

Thank you for your message.

To revert the template name and restore the automatic update functionality, simply reverse the same steps you followed during the initial renaming process. This means renaming all previously modified references—such as the template folder name, templateDetails.xml, and any related language or configuration files—back to "mednic".

Before making these changes, please back up your entire template folder to ensure your custom CSS and layout modifications remain safe. Once reverted, the template should reconnect to the official update server and resume receiving updates as expected.

Thank you very much for your prompt and clear response regarding reverting the template name change. I really appreciate the straightforward guidance you provided. I'm genuinely relieved to learn that the solution is not as complicated or extensive as I initially anticipated, especially considering the significant layout customizations and CSS modifications I've made to the template since the initial rename. Thank you. Best regards, Robert

You're most welcome, Robert.

I’m glad to hear that the explanation was helpful and reassuring for you. It’s great that your customizations will remain intact during the reversion process.

Please note that if you have made any changes directly in the template’s core CSS files, there’s a high chance those changes may be overwritten during future template updates. To ensure your custom styles remain intact after updates, we strongly recommend adding them via Custom CSS instead.

You can learn more about safely adding custom code by following this documentation: 👉 https://www.joomshaper.com/documentation/helix-framework/custom-code-css-js-meta

I made all the changes via custom CSS, so updates shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the additional information and support.

Hi Robert,

Apolozy for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, if you rename the template, it will no longer receive update notifications or automatic updates — even though the update server URL remains unchanged. This happens because Joomla matches the template name defined in the templateDetails.xml file with the one on the update server, and any name mismatch prevents updates from being recognized.

However, you will still receive Helix Ultimate plugin updates normally, as those are managed separately through the plugin update server.

Best regards

Thank you for your previous response confirming that renamed templates no longer receive automatic updates due to name mismatch between templateDetails.xml and the update server.

I would like to revert my template name change from my custom name back to the original "mednic" to restore automatic update functionality. However, since the initial rename, I have made substantial CSS layout customizations and modifications to the template.

Could you please provide specific guidance on:

  1. Step-by-step instructions to safely revert the template name back to "mednic" while preserving my existing customizations
  2. Which files specifically need to be renamed/modified (templateDetails.xml, language files, folder structure, etc.)
  3. Best practices for backing up my custom CSS and layout changes before the reversion process
  4. Recommended approach to ensure my customizations remain intact during and after the name reversion
  5. Whether there are any potential conflicts or issues I should be aware of when reverting a renamed template that has been extensively customized I want to ensure I can receive future template updates while keeping all my custom work safe. Any detailed documentation or step-by-step guide you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your continued support. Best regards, Robert
