[🐛EASY BUG] AVIF Image Files Not Being Recognized As Photos In Media Gallery

AVIF images are the best thing to happen to web development since the JPG was introduced. This powerful new image format supports up to 12-bit color, includes transparency, and produces significantly smaller files than JPG. With support now available in every major browser, AVIF should be the default image format for the web, as it can dramatically improve page load times and performance scores.

Yet tonight, to my great disappointment, SP Page Builder's Media Gallery is broken: it doesn’t recognize AVIF files as photos, and when you try to place them into a folder for organization, they end up in “All Items” as one giant mess. Even if you upload an AVIF file while editing on the front end and it appears to be in the correct folder, after you save and return to that folder, the AVIF file is no longer there—it has been moved to “All Items.”

I'm sure that, without bringing in AI, it's a simple one-liner of code to add the image/avif MIME type to the Media Gallery code. I see this issue has been mentioned and left unattended for over a year. It would be great if someone could quickly address this so that developers can correct it in just a few minutes so clients can use AVIF in their usual, organized workflows.

Just a FYI

One this one client site before replacing jpgs with avif, the page was was 67. After the subsitution to avif, the score shot up to 92 and reduced the collective image size by 300KB with no loss in photo quality.

JPG is dead.

Thank you for taking the time to report this and for the detailed context. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

AVIF image support in SP Page Builder was added starting from version 5.4.5. You can verify this in the changelog (Enabled support for AVIF image format).

To ensure this works correctly on your installation, please verify that Joomla’s Media Manager allows image/avif as a permitted MIME type. A quick way to confirm is to attempt an AVIF upload directly through Joomla’s Media Manager. If the upload is blocked or the file is not treated as an image, then AVIF is not yet enabled at the Joomla level.

If that is the case, please adjust the Media Manager configuration to include AVIF under the allowed image MIME types. Once Joomla recognizes AVIF as an image, SP Page Builder’s Media Gallery will follow accordingly.

If you have already confirmed that AVIF is enabled in Media Manager and the organizational behavior you described still persists, please let us know the following so we can investigate further:

  1. Your SP Page Builder version
  2. Your Joomla version
  3. Confirmation that AVIF is enabled as an image MIME type in Media Manager
  4. Whether the issue occurs in both backend and frontend editors

We appreciate your patience and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Hi Atick,

Just confirmed I have all the Media Gallery settings for enabling AVIF on Joomla 6.

The Joomla Media Gallery is actually functioning properly and shows both jpg and avif files.

However, in SP Page Builder, going into the same folder in the Gallery or image selector only shows the jpg, need to go to "All Items" to see the avif files.
