Downgrade To Free For Security?

If I’ve installed a theme that includes EasyStore and then want to update it—say, a security fix has just been released—how do I go about that? Is there a good way to downgrade so I can patch the security vulnerability on the site?

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

There's no need to downgrade your template or the EasyStore extension.

If a security fix has been released, simply update EasyStore to the latest version to receive the patch. The latest version includes the necessary security fixes, so no downgrade is required.

If you run into any issues while updating, please let us know and we'll be happy to help.

Thanks

Hi Ziaul,

Thanks for your reply, but I think my question was misunderstood.

My concern isn't how to update EasyStore. I understand that updating to the latest version fixes security issues.

My concern is about the licensing model.

I've been an Agency customer for many years, and throughout that time I've purchased templates that included EasyStore Pro. If a security vulnerability is discovered later, I can't update EasyStore without purchasing a separate EasyStore Pro license.

That means customers who already paid for a template with EasyStore included may be forced to leave a known security vulnerability unpatched unless they buy another product.

To me, that seems like a strange licensing model. If EasyStore is intended to be a separate commercial product requiring its own license for updates, then perhaps it shouldn't be bundled with templates in the first place. It would be clearer to sell the template and EasyStore as separate products from the beginning. Or sold with two variants, one pro and one free version of template.

Alternatively, bundled versions should at least receive security updates, while new features remain exclusive to EasyStore Pro license holders.

I think that would be a much better balance between licensing and security, and it would also be fair to long-time Agency customers.

Hello,

I apologise for the misunderstanding.

You are correct. If a user's licence has expired, they should still be able to install the latest security patch when one is available. We also provide security releases for users with expired licences.

Whenever a security update is released, we will make the security patch available to users whose licences have expired as well.

Thanks.

Hi Ziaul,

Thank you for your reply.

I think there is still some confusion about what happened.

When the security vulnerability was disclosed, there was no security patch available for my bundled EasyStore Pro version. Since I could not update the Pro version without purchasing a separate EasyStore license, my only option to secure the website was to install the latest EasyStore Free version.

After installing EasyStore Free, the backend still works correctly and all products are still present. However, no products are displayed on the frontend anymore.

I have tested the following:

EasyStore 2.0.3 Joomla 6.1.2 PHP 8.3 Cassiopeia template A direct EasyStore Products menu item (without SP Page Builder) Creating a completely new test product Clearing all caches

The result is always the same: the backend lists the products correctly, but the frontend displays no products at all.

Since the problem also occurs with a standard EasyStore menu item and the Cassiopeia template, it does not appear to be related to the template or SP Page Builder.

Could you please advise how to restore the bundled Pro installation correctly, or identify why the frontend no longer loads any products after replacing the bundled Pro version with EasyStore Free?

Thank you.

Could you please share temporary administrator access to your Joomla backend? You can provide the credentials securely in the hidden content section. Also, please take a full backup of your site before we make any changes.

Once I have access, I’ll investigate further and see what’s causing the issue. Let me know once you’ve shared the details!

Best regards,
