Joomla 6 Pre-Update Check reports "Potentially Serious Problem" for SP Page Builder 6.7.1

I am preparing to upgrade a website from Joomla 5.4.7 to Joomla 6.1.2.

The website is running:

SP Page Builder Pro 6.7.1
Joomla 5.4.7

During Joomla's Pre-Update Check, the following plugins are reported as "Potentially Serious Problem":

System - SP PageBuilder
System - SP Page Builder Pro Updater

The message says that these system plugins may interfere with the Joomla 6 upgrade.

Since SP Page Builder 6.7.1 is supposed to be compatible with Joomla 6, could you please confirm:

Is SP Page Builder Pro 6.7.1 fully compatible with Joomla 6.1.2?
Can I safely proceed with the Joomla upgrade while leaving both plugins enabled?
Is this warning expected because Joomla cannot automatically verify compatibility, or is there anything that should be done before upgrading?

Yes, SP Page Builder 6.7.1 is compatible with Joomla 6.1.2, so no worries. You can safely ignore the SP Page Builder warning shown in Joomla's Pre-Update Check.

However, we strongly recommend taking a full site backup before starting the update, just in case anything unexpected occurs.

Regarding this, can you explain why the joomla updater cannot confirm that System - SP PageBuilder and
System - SP Page Builder Pro Updater are compatable with J6.x and whether in the last 2 months JoomShaper has (hopefully) solved this issue? Thank you.

Hi Douglas,

Thanks for the follow-up. Here's why this happens.

Why Joomla can't confirm these two plugins

During the Pre-Update Check, Joomla lists every enabled non-core system plugin as a "Potentially Serious Problem" by default. It only removes a plugin from that list if it can confirm compatibility through an update server linked to that plugin itself or to its parent package.

SP Page Builder installs as a component (com_sppagebuilder), and its plugins are installed alongside it. They aren't wrapped in a Joomla package, so:

  • System - SP PageBuilder and System - SP Page Builder Pro Updater have no Package ID and no update site of their own.
  • The update site belongs to the component, and its update manifest declares Joomla 6 support (targetplatform includes 6.0–6.5).

So Joomla shows the component as compatible but can't link that to the two plugins, and it falls back to the generic warning. It doesn't mean the plugins are incompatible. It only means Joomla can't check them automatically.

Has it changed in the last 2 months?

The warning still appears in the current release (SP Page Builder 6.10.0), because the extension is still structured the same way. Functionally, SPPB 6.x is compatible with Joomla 6, and you can safely ignore this warning (see our docs: Joomla's Pre-Update Check).

Recommended steps before upgrading

  1. Take a full backup (files and database).
  2. Update SP Page Builder to the latest version (6.10.0), and update your template/Helix framework if you use one.
  3. In the Pre-Update Check, tick the confirmation checkbox for the non-core plugins warning and continue. You don't need to disable the SPPB plugins.
  4. After the upgrade, clear the Joomla and browser caches and check your pages.

If anything looks wrong after the upgrade, share the details here (or under Add hidden content if they're private) and we'll take a look.

If Joomla's pre-update warnings are occurring because the two SP Page Builder system plugins lack their own update server information and aren't associated with a parent Joomla package, would it be plausable for JoomShaper to address this by adding the appropriate compatibility metadata to those plugins (or) by restructuring the installation as a Joomla package?

Since Joomla already provides mechanisms for identifying extension compatibility, I wonder if it would be reasonable to implement one of these solutions rather than suggest administrators ignore warnings? Just food for thought.
