Hello,
Every time I try to install an OTF or TTF font or a ZIP file downloaded from Google Fonts, Font Squirrel, or elsewhere, I get the message “invalid font package” or “invalid file type.”
Page Builder SP version 6.9.1 on Joomla 6.1.4.
How can I use fonts outside of the Google API?
Unable to install fonts

Hi glenanPL,
the Font Book upload works a little differently than a normal Joomla media upload. You cannot upload the original TTF or OTF file directly, and simply putting the font files into a ZIP archive is not enough either.
According to the official JoomShaper documentation, you first need to create a proper Webfont Kit.
JoomShaper recommends the following process:
- Go to Transfonter and upload your original TTF or OTF font.
- Use only one font file at a time when creating the package. JoomShaper specifically notes that multiple font files in one package can cause problems.
- Convert the font and download the generated Webfont Kit.
- The downloaded ZIP is the package that should be uploaded to SP Page Builder - not the original TTF/OTF file and not a manually created ZIP.
- In Joomla, open SP Page Builder → Font Book, click Upload Font, and select the generated ZIP package.
If you still receive an upload error with a correctly generated package, JoomShaper also recommends checking the server configuration. In particular, the PHP memory_limit should be higher than 128M.
There are also some limitations worth noting: JoomShaper states that Font Book is intended for fonts used inside SP Page Builder Components and Modules. If you want to use a custom font globally across the entire Joomla site, they recommend using other methods.
The complete instructions, including the Transfonter settings and troubleshooting information, are available in the official documentation:
https://www.joomshaper.com/documentation/sp-page-builder/font-book
If that workflow feels too complicated, you could also have a look at OD Local Fonts (ODLF) as an alternative for managing local fonts in Joomla. https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/od-local-fonts/
Hello,
We apologize for the inconvenience.
SP Page Builder does not directly accept raw .TTF or .OTF font files as custom font packages. To use custom fonts outside of the Google Fonts API, you need to convert the font into webfont formats and upload the generated package.
Please follow these steps:
- Download or locate your custom font in
.TTFor.OTFformat. You can obtain fonts from various online font libraries. - Visit Transfonter (recommended) or Font Squirrel Webfont Generator.
- Upload your
.TTFor.OTFfont file using the Add Fonts / Upload Fonts option. Please upload one font at a time; for example, Regular and Bold should be treated as separate font files. - Select WOFF and WOFF2 as the output formats. These are the recommended formats for web use.
- You can disable the Demo page language option, as it is not required for SP Page Builder.
- Click Convert to generate the webfont files.
- Once the conversion is complete, click Download your kit. This will download a ZIP package containing the webfont files and the required CSS.
- You should now have a ZIP file, for example,
webfontkit-20220801-043436.zip. - In SP Page Builder Pro, use the Upload Font feature and select the generated ZIP package.
After uploading the package, the custom font should become available for use in SP Page Builder without relying on the Google Fonts API.
We hope this helps. Please let us know if you encounter any issues while uploading the generated font package.
