Short Pages And Footer At Bottom

Hi, some of my pages are quite short in content so I would like the footer to stay at the bottom of the visible window at all times. I don't know CSS but did find and old post here about it so had tried using the following in custom code but it didn't work.
.footer { position:fixed; } also tried .footer { position:absolute; }
I understand that CSS stuff is beyond the scope of help here but even a pointer on what to search for would be useful. fwiw I just have a single line footer for now and am using footer1 as the position

Accepted AnswerPerfect, I was working my way through the tips, really! Just didn't think to search there. That dent in my forehead from slapping it is getting deeper by the day. The link after the tips looks like it will be extremel useful to me too. Thanks again

Accepted AnswerJust a follow-up if I may, I see that basically overwrites the default Helix Footer which is fine, but I wanted to use the other 'footer based' functionality, like in the demos, I would need to forgoe that CSS code yes?
I'm wondering if there is a design flaw i my site, mostly personal,in that its not 'long' enough which is requiring me to have the fixed footer, lol
