Perhaps you have chosen an inconsistent example and you need something simpler?

If this all is not what you need, then CSS will not help solve this task. Only Javascript high level skils + HTML/CSS, without using SPPB and any similar. The site that you cited as an example uses this particular approach. Therefore, I suggested that perhaps you have chosen the wrong example.
