Hello, is there a way to embed a portfolio into an article or SPPB page, instead of only publishing via menu item?

Yes, there is a SP Simple Portfolio Module that you can use in your articles or in SPPB pages to show the latest item from SP Simple Portfolio.

Accepted AnswerThen knowing it you have those options:
- You can use Module Addon to use SP Simple Portfolio Module inside, like any other module inside Page structure.
- If we talk about Article - you can use module also inside using Joomla native Module Button or shortcode.
- OR, you can publish SP Simple Portfolio Module in template module position (for example, content-bottom) under the page.
