Have you tried classic method? To create a menu item "Login" view and set that there, in "Options" tab. Because login from template uses the same (core) mechanism.

yes I have, but then I don't have the user name and login/-out in the header section anymore, and I would like to keep that.

Can that be done by making the login a menu item?

Probably, just create 2nd Menu, and add it there.
