Update-Upgrade Issue With Backwards Compability Plugin

Template 2 weeks ago

Hi there, I bought the Kidzy template. Installed without any new extensions, so it's still fresh. It runs yet on 5.4.2. PHP is 8.3.29. But also the same issue with 8.2 and 8.1. But is it all suitable with PHP 8.4 yet? SP Page Builder is 6.2.2. Kidzy template 3.0.2. (notification = up-to-date). Helix 3.0.5. But as soon as I disable the backwards compatibility plugin, the frontend crashes. The red screen displays the message: "Sorry, there was a problem we could not recover from." The server returned a "500 - Whoops, looks like something went wrong." That's bad because it means it can't be upgraded to Joomla 6. Never. Updating from 5.4.1 to 5.4.2 also caused problems with the language file. But I was be able to fix that. I think there's still old code in various files (and the template) from the old Joomla 4 that hasn't been updated correctly and properly. Last update October 2024! Please help how to fix this!?

Regards, Erik

Hello Erik,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed report, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you’ve experienced.

We understand your concern regarding the dependency on the Backward Compatibility plugin and how this impacts future upgrades. At this time, we can confirm that we are able to provide a fix to ensure proper functionality on Joomla 5, including resolving the issue that occurs when disabling the Backward Compatibility plugin.

However, we would like to clarify an important point regarding future compatibility. Kidzy is built on the Helix 3 framework, and at present, we do not have plans to update Helix 3–based templates for Joomla 6. As a result, Kidzy is most likely not going to receive a Joomla 6–specific update.

We understand that this may be disappointing, especially when planning for long-term upgrades. Your feedback is valuable and highlights important considerations for future framework and template development.

If you would like, we are happy to assist you with the Joomla 5 fix . Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Kind regards

Hello Atick, Thanks for you honest answer. In my opnion -a template like this one with a high amount of buyers/users- earns it to make it for a long time use and so suitable with Joomla 6 (and even higher). Especialy when it is made with sp page builder. And in y opnion it is good to should mention it in the specifications so that people can take it into consideration before buying.

It would also be good to rebuild (such) a template for Joomla 5-6. Not having to constantly update and adapt from 3 to 4 and beyond, because sooner or later you'll run into problems. To be honest, I also expect that from a company like JoomShaper...

And yes, I would like to have the fix and/or be informed on how to do it.

Regards, Erik

Hello There,

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the delayed response over the weekend.

You will find the template in the Hidden Content area. Please install it via the Joomla Extension Installer. Before proceeding, we strongly recommend taking a full site backup to avoid any potential issues.

Please note that although the template may work on Joomla 5 without the Backward Compatibility plugin enabled, but it is not compatible with Joomla 6.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. Best regards

So the newest version is also included the fix. Nice, it works. Thanks!! So, we can say, for all the buyers; If the template use (build on) the Helix 3 Framework, it is old and will not/never work with Jooma 6. Jooma 5 is the latest to work with. If the template use Helix Ultimate, for now it works with, Joomal 4, 5 and 6. Best regards

Hi ,

Thank you for the confirmation—glad to hear the latest update resolved the issue and everything is working as expected.

Yes, your understanding is correct:

Templates built on the legacy Helix 3 framework are no longer maintained and are not compatible with Joomla 6. Joomla 5 is the last supported major version for Helix 3–based templates.

Templates built on Helix Ultimate are actively maintained and currently compatible with Joomla 4, Joomla 5, and Joomla 6.

We always recommend using Helix Ultimate–based templates for new projects to ensure forward compatibility with future Joomla releases.

If you need any assistance with migration or template recommendations, feel free to let us know.

Please marked the issue as solved

Best regards

Okay, clear. Is -i think- a good idea to mention that at the information for each template. In my case, if i know that before i did not buy that template. You understand, i hope.

Jus one more thing i see yet: A module, position bottom, with the text generator (wysiwyg), if i made a hyperlink there is no link in the frontend. Everything seems allright in the backend. There is text but no link. If i make a menu item in the bottom the links are working well. You will see and can check.

Hi Erik,

Thank you for sharing the details and source code. I have reviewed the footer section of your site.

  1. Dynamic Year ({year}) not working:

    • The {year} placeholder is present in the code but is not being rendered dynamically on the frontend. Normally, this token works when processed by the template’s system. Since it is added via a Custom HTML module, the editor treats it as plain text, which is why the current year is not displayed automatically.
  2. Hyperlinks under Copyright:

    • Please check if the issue resolve or not.

Best regards

Hi, Thanks for quick answer!!! 1-Annoying that that has changed. Means that I will have to do that myself every year from now on. Isn't there another way to have it done automatically? Or is there perhaps a plugin for it? 2-YESSS! what did you do or what did i wrong??? I spent a lot of time on it, almost went crazy because of it... Regards, Erik

Hi Erik,

Thank you for your reply.

  1. Regarding the dynamic year, unfortunately, I am not able to provide a solution for automating it within the Custom HTML module.

  2. About the links in the footer, the issue was caused by an image in your footer overlapping with the text, which prevented the hyperlinks from being clickable.

Best regards

Hello, That gap is okay now. But the logo issue is still there. The logo is cut off at the bottom in portrait mode; in landscape mode, it's fine. But in both cases, it is served small. Thanks, Erik

We apologize for the delayed response due to the recent national election holiday. Regarding the logo size on mobile devices, the template you are using is designed this way, which is why the logo appears smaller.

I have added the following CSS code to your Template Options -> Custom Code -> Custom CSS

@media only screen and (max-width: 768px) {
    #sp-header {
        height: 100px;
    }
    #sp-header-sticky-wrapper {
        top: 10px;
    }
    #sp-header .logo img {
        width: 130px;
    }
    #sp-header #sp-logo {
        height: 110px;
    }
    #offcanvas-toggler > i{
        top: 18px;
        position: relative;
    }
