I actually found the problem on my own. Since the template was upgraded from Helix Ultimate 1 and had a style imported to it, it didn't use the new header style. It had special module positions set to accomodate the logo and menu. Hence the offcanvas didn't work after upgrade. I switched to one of the new gorgeous heading styles and removed the old positions. Boom the offcanvas worked as a charm. Thank for all the feedback.
