Thanks for your question. No you dont need Helix for using layout bundles but you should have SP Page Builder pro for using our layouts.These laypits comes with page builder pro you just need to import them

Its actually up to you because we have 138+ templates and most of them are using Helix framework. So it depends what type of or which topic you prefer. You can choose it from here

I think we have some misunderstanding. I don't want to use a "special" made template but standard joomla template I guess, to build a site using Page Builder Pro and one of the lay-out bundles. Question is: will this work?

Yes it will work as I said you can try this by yourself as Helix Ultimate is a free template so no worries
