A Few Questions About Page Builder 3 Vs 4 With Updates To Php8 And Joomla 4

Hi, would be grateful for some advice please.

When I upgrade my website to php8, I can no longer access articles that I built using PB3 - I think from the documentation this may be a temporary issue?

Page Builder is great for me as a non coder so I really want to stick with it, but I also need to be able to update to php8 and in the New Year I will be moving to Joomla 4 so trying to forward think as well.

If I upgrade to Page Builder 4 will this work well with php8? I've seen that PB4 is a front end editor which will be new for me as I work in the backend but something I will get used to so not a deal breaker. If I upgrade, will articles I built using PB3 be editable with PB4? (or will I be constantly swapping between the two) And then how well do PB3 and PB4 work with Joomla 4 - are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of? And do they work well with the default template in Joomla 4 Cassiopeia?

Thanks in advance Tracey

Thanks for the suggestion Olivier

An update for anyone else having the same issues when I swapped my editor from JCE to Tiny MCE everything started working again!

I have no idea why - feel free to share if you know why

But for now, I'm going with it, I'm up to date with php8 and PB3 is working again so its back to work instead of problem solving.

Hi there!

Thanks for your query.

SP Page Builder 3 and 4 both are now compatible with PHP 8.0 maximum, but they works well with PHP 7.4. As SPPB 3 will be supported by us for at least 3 years more, so you can stick with SPPB 3 still if the frontend editor is not suitable for you, and you can test the SPPB 4 meanwhile even on your localhost.

Personally I can edit articled those are built with SPPB 3. And SPPB 3 and 4 both works with Joomla 4 Cassiopeia, but they works better with Helix Ultimate, as it's visually looks beautiful then.

Best Regards

See this thread before considering SPPB4: https://www.joomshaper.com/forum/question/18061?order=newest .

Rashida thanks for your reply. Unfortunately SP3 is definitely NOT working with php8.

Any articles or pages created with the page builder while using php7.4 are uneditable in the back and front end. When you select them you just get a blank screen.

Exactly the same when you try to create a new article or page.

The only way to use SP3 is to roll back to php7.4 which is fine for the next month, but no longer than that.

Ian, thank you for the link, about SP4, it doesn't look like that will be a solution for me then, especially as php8 is mentioned in that thread too!

And I should also mention everything else is up to date, and I have cleared the host, site and browser cache and tried switching browsers.

Would love any other suggestions please?

Enable error reporting and try : do you have an error showed ? What is the content of your error log after trying ?

Hi Tracey,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us and glad that it is working now.

Which version of JCE you were using, please?

Best Regards

Hi, I had a check and realised JCE isn't on the autoupdates so I didn't have the latest version from Sept22, that has now resolved the issue.
