If you are using helix framework then you don't need to compile from joomla backend, just change your colors from preset and clear your cache please. If you want to change any css in the template then you can also make a custom.css file in templates/yourtemplate/css/ file. for the template always get custom.css file automatically. then just write your css code in custom.css file.

Please go to Extensions>Templates>Styles> Click on your current default template name then choose Template Options > Advanced > Compile Less to CSS Set it OFF if is ON.
