Update SPPB To 5.4.x With Joomla 3.10

Hi, a customer of mine has updated SPPB 3.8 to version 5.4 because it was suggested in the Joomla updates backend. Now some things do not work as before. I fear it is not compatible with his Joomla 3.10 site and PHP 7.4. Aren't there the minimum requirements? Can he install SPPB 3.8 above without causing damage and thus making a downgrade?

Ciao Roberto,

Honest advice. If your client still have Joomla 3.10, please keep older SPPB 3.8.10 there.

Upgrade component only if you will upgrade Joomla from 3 > 4 or 5 after.

SPPB 5 was built mostly for new Joomla and PHP 8.

Hi Paul, thank you very much for your reply. I know that you shouldn't upgrade to SPPB 5 with Joomla 3 and especially with PHP 7.4; but some customers do not want to migrate to Joomla 4 because they use old incompatible components, abandoned by the developers. Having said that, I ask again: since he has already made the mistake of updating SPPB, can I downgrade him? Do you have a procedure and documentation about it?

Extra tip!

About extensions abandoned by the developers., indeed there are many of them. But you have to analyze if it can't be replaced by another extension, or if it is still needed by him in this form at all. Sticking to the old Joomla by force, results in the fact that in some time you will have to hire me or someone else to clean the site from malware code added by hackers & spammers. And this is not cheap service.

I agree 100%! I also tell this to my clients who do not give up on the migration... and the related expense.

Yes, you can still install older version. This downgrade should work especially if you have not edited any of the pages. If you did... it's better to recover site from full backup (your hosting company has it, if you forgot to make it)

NOTICE!

BEFORE installing old SPPB 3.8.10 please delete that folder: components\com_sppagebuilder

Why? Becuase you won't be able to use addons from SPPB 5 inside SPPB 3 anyway, and big mess in list of addons & views etc. Trust me, you don't need that.

Unfortunately the customer notified me late and had already made changes, in addition to users and orders already registered. I will propose to try downgrade in an offline clone copy or resign to doing site recovery. Thanks Paul

You can try reinstall with SPPB 3.8 but edited page may not work in editor after. Just test it before whole recovery process.

Sorry, but here my role ends.
