if we talk about caption displayed under image, indeed using Image addon is not possible yet. But you can use Feature addon, and use Title for that with small font etc.

In Image addon you can use ALT and TITLE. Both are very useful.

In Articles - yes, use default Joomla features, for example "Images & Links" or TinyMce/JCE editor toolbar.
