Migrating From Joomla 3.10.x To 4.0.3

SP Page Builder 4 years ago

Hi, I have a big (at least for me) problem with migrating from joomla 3.10.x to 4.0.3. In the list of information unanavailable I have many items that refer to the SP page builder. Days ago I updated sp page builder, but the automatic update never went well so I installed it again. There are currently several versions of the "SP page builder" modules. If I launch the upgrade to 4.0 the installation ends with an error. Do you have any tips to solve the problem?

Hi.

Yes, I have one. Do you really need to upgrade to Joomla 4.x right now? Give me one reasonable reason why you want a J4 in next days / week ?

To be honest, most advanced webmasters which I know recommend waiting at least 2 months.

J4.x is very fresh CMS and still may have many hidden bugs & issues.

Hi Rob, If you manage more than few websites - you can imagine that this kind of migration/upgrade can be problematic and as we all know support for J3.10 is planned for next 1,5-2 years, so we all have time for it. I am glad that you agree with me. Something else is to create a new one on J4 from scratch than upgrade from J3.x.

It's like changing a phone every single year or twice a year, because there is a NEW model.

Hi Paul, Yes a clean install is also a good option. I gues we in Europe have become upgrade freeks specialy on devises and software. like we starting a new race to the next version every time. And you are so right, everything is working well and there is no hurry at all. Nothings broke and the sun is shining, I going have a sit outside. Have a nice weekend!

I don't know if I have to uninstall all modules for which there are no compatibility information available, but in this case what guarantee do I have that everything will continue to work fine? La verifica di aggiornamento non danno nessuna segnalazione

Thanks Any suggestions will be valuable Ugo

Paul

I am agree with you about the opportunity to postpone the upgrade waiting for a stable version of joomla 4.x.x. However, the compatibility problem will come back sooner or later and I would like to solve it with peace of mind and not in the middle of the migration.

As I remember - SP Cookie Consent plugin is not Joomla 4 ready (!)

So I can guess, that some others modules and/or plugins are also not Joomla 4.x ready. That's why you have this kind of error message.

In that case you should:

  1. Reserve 2 hours of free time
  2. Make backup
  3. DISABLE all not core-extensions (plugins, modules, components)
  4. Make Joomla upgrade
  5. Then enable them one by one, to check which one makes a problem.

Hi Paul, as you suggested, I have disabled all modules for which no compatibility information was available except shaper_helixultimate because it is the default template. Otherwise I would just have to disable vi-solutions Library In the pre update check phase, I received the same list of modules with the information not available, and the migration gave the same error. I believe that in order to have reliable feedback I have to uninstall the modules, but in that way I don’t know if the site is still usable. I started building the site with joomla and helixultimate using a quick start package and subsequently bought the SP page builder pro twice. But I see that there are modules of old versions. Can they be removed or do I risk losing my job? Why does the installation package not clean up the environment by replacing obsolete modules? I tried to install jooma 4.0.2 with helixutimate 2.0.5 and later I also installed sp page builder pto 3.7.5. and it seems to work fine. I also exported and imported the pages created with SP page builder (with a little work it is possible to fix them), the big problem are the articles for which rewriting is unthinkable.

In general - we do not deliver Joomla upgrade support - it's beyond typical help.

For sure - on your place I would:

  1. Wait with upgarde for Joomla 4.0.10 at least.
  2. Make upgrade on test subdomain (where you have full backup of your current website)

Just disable Module, Plugins - you don't have to uninstall them. Make screenshots how it was to remember.

Hi Paul,

You guys really need to do something on your communication. In the happy emails we read that, the world is so beautifull with the new helixultimate, followed by new templates new tepmlates and more and more new templates. maybe the "new template" team should first work on fixter? or arino?
