Problems With Updates (template And PHP)

Hi! I have a problem with a customers webpage.

I have just taken over the site, and I do not have a lot of experience when it comes to joomla. But I have some.

First of we bought a license to be able to update the SP Page Builder. Then, when trying to update the template, we are not able to update it directly and are given a link to a download with manual installation.

The installed version is 1.3, and last updated version is 1.9. The Template is: Cuisine.

Here are my questions/problems:

  1. I have NO qlue at all what changes where made in 2017 when the site was made. (it does not seem to have been updated after that). So my question is: What heppens if I manually install the template? Will it override the excisting modifications, or just update the core files?
  2. Is the active template ready for PHP 8.0 and further on?
  3. Is there another template that have taken the place of the template we are using?
  4. What is the most common reasons for the page to not work (neither backend og frontend) when trying to update to PHP8.0 (or newer)

We do have a time problem on this because our domeain and webhotel provider have util the 15. february as a deadline to update the PHP version.

Hi Bjørn,

yes, taking website from somebody else is always associated with risk. You don't know what was changed and what wasn't, or if there are any hidden "tricks & hacks".

  1. Always start with full website backup, without that step do not follow next steps!
  2. Yes, you can update files of template also manually using FTP tool. But remember also about plugin folder.
  3. After template - update, you can switch PHP for 3minutes and check few subpages. It's the best method, becuase template is only one part of the website.
  4. I don't fully understand, but sure, you can use different template instead from our portfolio, always check for templates based on Helix Ultimate framework! They are more modern one.
  5. Template code or old plugins code ! Those two are the most common.

Extra Warning!

  • Your site uses K2 component (not ours!) - it can be huge problems with that extension on PHP 8.
  • About widgetkit plugin that you have also.... not easy if you don't have access to updates from YooTheme developer or you cannot replace with alternative solution.

So as I see so far, there are several challenges ahead of you!

And you have one day for all those, hmm?

If i download, then upload the template from web (Cuisine) will it then remove all the changes that was made back in 2017?

Is quisine, the template, compatible with PHP 8.0 and above?

About K2 - Is this something I need there? (From what I have seen, it is the SP Builder that have been used to create the site. Along with the template)

If i download, then upload the template ...

If you will upload a new version of the template naturally it will override all files from a template, but settings and custom.css will stay as it was.

compatible with PHP 8.0....

There may be some problems, so make sure that you will update Helix3 plugin to version 3.0.3 - with that I can help here becuase this is our joomshaper product.

About K2....(and widgetkit plugin)

this is question beyond Joomshaper support, that's why I gave you only "ping". In orginal demo package there was no K2 nor Widgetkit inside so it was added by 1st webmaster.
