I have followed these steps... frankly, I would prefer just two horizontal links like CS EN with active language in different color rather then flags. but none of the settings combination on the module presents any results...

You need to set a default menu for both language menus. I have set the first menu item as default for both languages. Now the language switcher shows. Please check your site and make necessary modifications.
