Is there a way to have the addon contact form to return a message when the form is sent or rejected. Right now there is no indication if the form was submitted or not.

in theory you should see short message that message was sent or was a problem.
but I think using Form Builder instead of Contact Form is much better solution - because you can control messages (1 & 2) or add redirection link (3) to THANK YOU page to give user info that message was sent and you will contact with him soon.
