Child Templates

Edit: Found another article which talked about checking templateDetails.xml for inheritable = 1, since I couldn't find it, can I assume that Helix doesn't support child templates?
Hi, I have been reading an article about Child Temlpate and I am not sure if its what I need so thought I would ask.
My site, under Helix Template Setting > Layout is currently set to 3x6x3. For articles only, I would like to change that to a single column - 12.
Would I do that by creating a child template from helix and then selecting that, under for my Articles under Layout > Layout ?

Accepted AnswerThanks for the link, but i was under the impression that those setting where site wide. e.g. every page/article would be 3x6(Content)x3. So Icould use left/right on various pages.
However for articles only, I won't be using Left/Right so instead want it to be 0x12(Content)x0
Was that explained in the the link you sent and did I just miss it. Cheers
