Search Module - Position In Header Section Not Working

Template 1 year ago

Hi, sorry for being back again

I have an issue with the Search Module, it works just fine when recalled via menu item but it does not work (in the sense it does not find anything) when searching via the module position in the header.

furthermore I have found instructions on how to change the language of the search placeholder - but was unable to find how to change other terms from english into italian - checked all language .ini files - but nevertheless the chosen language is not applied. Please could you once again help me

kind regards , Rita

Ciao Rita,

sorry for small delay with response, it was a weekend.

As you may not know, in Joomla 4 and Joomla 5 old Search component and its module do NOT work anymore. It may be a reason why your "old" module doesn't work.

In those new Joomla versions, SmartSearch should be used.

Hi Paul, Thank you.

I have enabled as fare as I understand Plugins of Smart Search as well as the Smart Search Component and the Module is a Smart Search module - I called "Cerca" in position "search"

I think I do not understand what you meant to say - could you please kindly explain again ?

best regards

Yes, you did OK now with a module.

But we are not Joomla Support to help with Joomla core features, it's on your side.

Look into Joomla Offcial Guides.

Hi Paul, so sorry to be back again - so Joomla Smart Seach Module only works when recalled via menu and/or link with a page - BUT does not work if the module position of the Smart Search Module is placed into the Helix Ultimat Header. Now I have very much link not to have to create a header on every single page - but use the global header of the template layout - so I do not understand what is happening - I have made a custom module containing an image linked to my search page - module positon called "icona" (also tried other already created positions) but non are being visualized at all - but ok if I add these positions into my pagebuilder home page. Any Idea on what could cause this 'misbehaviour' ?

Looking very much forward to your appreciated reply

Use "menu" module position to get any module in the header.

You can also add menu link to SmartSearch component .

SmartSearch module may not fully work inside SPPB page becuase of JS conflict, but I cannot change that.

Hi, i have/had done as per your reply line 1 and 2 but no result at all - even tried to add just to make try a custom module with simple text BLABLABLA - but not even this come up If you have a little time - please see my temporary site

else I will have a go and install the helix framework over again - I have been using Helix form some years now but never encountered this kind of issue

If you used Helix for some years as you claimed... this same method that worked last year, still works.

what for you added some many module position inside header, less is better. Too many of them can cause problems, becuase you have to set Grid for each of them.

Good Morning Paul, as per your kind comment of yesterday I will wait a few hours for you to see WHAT IS IT I AM DOING WRONG - never had this kind of issue before

what I have done though before coming up with this issue is: I have removed the update site for Helix Ultimate as I found that the framework got updated without me knowing - in fact what happened - I all of a sudden found again my preset1.css file back to default version of the installation including also the files present2 - preset8 (file I had deleted as they are not in use) so I removed the update site in order to prevent this kind of update Maybe I should not have done so ?

Morning...

I will start from 2nd, In Joomla plugins do not update alone, it's always a webmaster action. Anyway, please do NOT edit template core files, we created custom.css for that purpose, I hope you read Helix documenation about Custom CSS - If not do it today.

I assume that you want to have "SmartSearch" module in Header, am I right?

Yes, I wanted the SmartSeach module working in Header - but since that did not work - I have opted for the solution by entering a custom module that links to the SmartSearch -

but now my problem is that the menu (offcanvas menu toggler) is no longer displayed in the header

(and yes, this "automatic" update never happend before - but over the last week I had to copy my own css files from my backup folder

Ok, thanks for confirmation. I will check now.

I also hope that you do not need this search icon like from '90 style.

You have now all, also smartsearch module + menu [=] . I remove only that old style icon. Do not use things that are out of fashion, you are Italian.

Hi Paul, you are right - and thank you ever su much on correcting the menu in the header - by chance can you tell me what was wrong ?

So sorry, but the Search Module when in header does not work - it does not find anything - whereas when recalled from the menu - results are found; for example search "asciugamani" - see images - https://postimg.cc/qNCWG2Sq https://postimg.cc/tZ9fywTn you already told me that this issue refers to Joomla nothing to do with Joomshaper - so if you confirm this - I need to remove the module from the header and use fall back

  1. module that was published on "icon.." postion took too much space and hidden all elements after.
  2. As you know It's not up to me (us) what the SmartSearch component indexes or not. And template just display component or module.

I cannot answer to that question yet :/ but I will try to ask somebody from our team...

Hi Paul, just to let you know that I got all working just fine now - including SmartSearch Module in Header Section. What I have done is create a new temporary subdomain and restored a backedup version with toghether with the backedup database - all working OK. I just lost a relative little time adding what was not in the old database. now ready to publish. Thank you and have a nice day

Ufff... good to hear it.

Becuase we tested SmartSearch on our Helix sites and everywhere was just OK. But not Perfect as it was J3.x

Joomla Smart Search is actually brutish and stupid. I can't seem to pre-filter to show only certain categories or tags - so all the stuff that came over from the old site, a carcass we pick over as we create up to date content, shows up in search. It's...stupid. There is no intelligence to it at all.

But now the client wants the search turned on and I have to go through hundreds of index items and turn them off. (And given how stupid smart search is, will this 'feature' just turn these items back on when the site gets reindexed?)

I have the same opinion, this is not a tool that is a step forward. I also don't understand why old search was "disabled" and development was stopped by Joomla!Team. I guess we all have to look for alternatives.

So stupid it even returns trashed and unpublished items! Useless. ExtnBakers Ajax search (not free) is pretty good but hard to put the modal where you want it.

Other ideas?

update: it's me that's brutish and dumb - I poked around quite a bit and found a way to create filters enough to exlude categories and articles older than a certain date. This gets me 90% of the way there. It's kludgy and non-intuitive though.

update2: brutal. The remaining 10% is trial and error, tweak content map, re-index (don't clear the index or you'll wipe out the content map), try and err some more, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat. My ExtnBakers test worked perfectly on one - one! - try.

There is legacy "classic" search component+module that works inside Joomla 4.4

https://github.com/joomla-extensions/search/releases/tag/4.0.1-dev

It request using language files from J3 and some CSS styling but ... so far works on my demo sites. And yes, you have to remove all trashed articles if you don't want to show them in result page!

Just for inspiration purposes, I cannot support it here for free.
