Hi Giuseppe,
Since your website and administrator panel are both showing a 500 Internal Server Error after migration, please follow these steps to identify the exact cause.
1. Check the configuration.php file in cPanel
- Log in to your hosting cPanel.
- Open File Manager and navigate to your Joomla website's root directory (usually
public_html).
- Locate
configuration.php and click Edit.
- Check the following database settings and make sure they match your hosting provider's details:
public $host = 'localhost';
public $user = 'your_database_user';
public $password = 'your_database_password';
public $db = 'your_database_name';
public $dbprefix = 'your_table_prefix_';
Please note that the database host may differ depending on your hosting provider. Also, make sure the database user has the required privileges.
2. Enable error reporting and debugging
In the same configuration.php file, find these settings and temporarily change them to:
public $debug = true;
public $error_reporting = 'maximum';
Save the file and reload your live website. Check whether a more detailed PHP or Joomla error message appears.
If the error persists, check cPanel → Metrics → Errors and your hosting account's PHP error log for additional details.
3. Check the PHP version and extensions
Your online server is running PHP 8.5, while your localhost uses PHP 8.3. Please check whether your Joomla version, template, extensions, and installed libraries are compatible with the PHP version running on the server.
If possible, temporarily test with PHP 8.3 or another PHP version officially supported by your Joomla release and extensions. You can usually change this through cPanel → MultiPHP Manager or the equivalent PHP selector provided by your host.
4. Verify the database migration
- Open phpMyAdmin from cPanel.
- Confirm that the imported database and Joomla tables are present.
- Check that the database name, username, password, and table prefix in
configuration.php are correct.
- Make sure the database user has the necessary privileges.
5. Check the live site again
After making these changes, visit both the frontend and administrator URL:
https://yourdomain.com/
https://yourdomain.com/administrator/
If the issue remains, please share the exact error message shown after enabling debugging, along with the relevant PHP error log entry. Please remove passwords, database credentials, and other sensitive information before sharing any logs.
Once the issue is resolved, remember to disable debugging and restore the appropriate error-reporting level.
These steps should help us determine whether the problem is related to PHP compatibility, database configuration, or a Joomla extension or server configuration issue.
Best regards
