Installation Notes

Quick Notes on Installation

If the host web server has ZIP support enabled with PHP, it is possible to upload a zipped (.zip) SP Page Builder package file that will be installed by Joomla! backend default installer.

The installation process for Joomla extensions is the same as the one for templates. After the SPPB component has been installed, you are presented with a message saying that the installation process was a success. It also means you can use it for your new project.

There is usually an upper limit to the size of files that can be uploaded to the web server itself. This limit is set in the PHP configuration file (php.ini) and may differ between web servers and web hosts. The limit cannot be altered from within Joomla!. In that case, you have to ask Hosting Support for help.

Error 500 during the installation

A 500 Internal Server Error during the installation of SP Page Builder Pro is almost always caused by a server-side limitation or a file permission conflict. Since "500" is a generic catch-all, the first goal is to find the specific cause. Here are the most likely fixes, ranked from most common to least.

SP Page Builder Pro is a heavy extension. If your server is set to "standard" hosting defaults, the installation script likely timed out or ran out of memory.

Go to your Hosting Control Panel (cPanel/Plesk) > Select PHP Version > Options and ensure these minimums are set:

  • memory_limit: 256M (512M is better)

  • upload_max_filesize: 25M or higher

  • post_max_size: 128M or higher

  • max_execution_time: 300 or higher

As of 2026, ensure you are running a supported version of PHP.

  • SP Page Builder 5.x/6.x: Requires PHP 8.2, 8.3 or PHP 8.4

  • Running SP Page Builder on PHP 7.4 or earlier will trigger a 500 error immediately.

Joomla requires specific permissions to write the new files during installation.

  • Folders: Must be 755

  • Files: Must be 644

  • Ownership: Ensure the files are owned by the web server user (usually www-data or the account username). If you uploaded via FTP as a different user, the installer might not have "permission" to create the component folders.

Quick Notes on Update

  • SP Page Builder can be updated or upgraded like any other Joomla extension just by installing a new version on the current one.
  • You do not have to uninstall the previous version; in fact, you MUST NOT do that.
  • We strongly suggest making a backup of the whole MySQL database before that. This step is important especially if you are planning to upgrade from the Free version to the Pro (commercial) version or older versions. We recommend using the free backup component for Joomla! like Akeeba Backup.
  • When upgrading from Free to Professional, you usually have to install the Professional package twice, without uninstalling anything in between. Sometimes Joomla! does not copy some of the files and folders the first time you install it.

Browser Cache Removal

Cache

Some JavaScript used for a new version of a component was modified; however, the browser being used is still using the old cached version of the JavaScript, which no longer works. Be sure to clear your browser's cache and your Joomla! cache.

Browser Cache Removal

Browser cache is the temporary internet files where your frequently visited websites, data, and always-needed information are stored in folders for fast access and to improve the speed of internet surfing. Update Notification Problem

If you have bought the Pro version of SP Page Builder to get an update notification and the possibility to update with just one click, you have to put your account data in the settings area.

  • In SP Page Builder Dashboard, navigate to Settings, and click on the "License & Update" tab, where you have to fill two fields: License Key and your e-mail from the JoomShaper.com account.
  • In Extensions -> Update : choose "Clear Cache" button to delete all old requests. Now you can also click "Find Updates" if you're sure that we published a new version and you still have an old one installed.
